The slogan “Scotland now lies on the Aare” gave me the impetus many years ago to take part in several whisky tastings. However, the number of up to 30 different Single Malt whiskies proved to be “too much”, although only a “thimbleful” was poured per whisky. In 1997, I was given a membership with the Scotch Malt Whisky Society as a gift. In the same year, we visited the Members’ Room The Vaults in Edinburgh, where we raised a toast in the club as Hong Kong was handed back from Great Britain to China. In addition, thanks to our SMWS membership, we found the Dunain Park Hotel in Inverness, a former Georgian hunting lodge with splendid rooms. After dinner, we were each offered two Society whiskies. Unfortunately, the hotel was badly damaged by a fire in 2014.

I would never have thought that “Uisge Beatha” would accompany my life for so long. Having now enjoyed numerous SMWS bottles and attended 100 tastings to date, I still look forward to further tastings.
